Playback Technician (Role 6)

The STEAM [R6] Playback Tech runs Ableton Live! They create sets for click, guide, tracks, and automation. Creates and maintains interfaces for control from the stage. Must continually review new tools to improve productivity and quality. The [R6] Playback Tech role is scheduled by the [R10s] Scheduling Manager on Planning Center.

Must have a good understanding of music theory and musicianship. In order to start learning the [R6] STEAM Playback Tech Role, one must first achieve the Supervised Training Level [L3] (or higher) for each of the Tech Roles that will include automation (i.e.: R2, R3, R4, R5). The first Tech Role to include automation is the [R5] Studio Tech with (1) tempo for time based effects and (2) key for tune adjustments. The prerequisites for the [R5] Studio Tech apply here as well.

  • The [R6] Playback Tech is responsible for performing and submitting all checklists assigned.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is responsible for creating the weekly songs in the Ableton playback template.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is responsible for creating the weekly setlist from the song templates.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is responsible for producing the click, guide, and tracks in the songs and setlist.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is responsible for coordinating with [R2] Media Tech for lyrics automation.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is responsible for coordinating with [R3] Lighting Tech for lighting automation.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is responsible for coordinating with [R4] Video Tech for video automation.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is responsible for coordinating with [R5] Studio Tech for broadcast automation.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is responsible for coordinating with the musicians for the automation of scenes, etc.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is responsible for training any volunteers being onboarded in this role.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is responsible for working with the [R11] Tech Director on relevant improvements.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is expected to maintain accurate blockout dates in Planning Center.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is expected to quickly accept or decline role assignments in Planning Center.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is expected to arrive early and well-prepared for the service or event.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is expected to show up looking professional with a non-distracting appearance.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is expected to complete role setup before scheduled service or event begins.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is expected to complete role teardown and cleanup before leaving.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is expected to remain focused on role for the duration of service or event.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is expected to leave phones, food, and drinks behind the safety tape line.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is expected to attend any worship team and STEAM team gatherings.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is expected to invest in building relationships with team and congregants.
  • The [R6] Playback Tech is expected to perform minimum independent study for continuous improvement.
  • Weekly independent study: 1+ hours (minimum)
  • Weekly song & setlist setup: 1-2 hours
  • STEAM briefing meeting: 15 minutes
  • Tech Role Setup: 15 minutes
  • Worship Rehearsal: 1.5 hours
  • Sunday Service: 1.5 hours
  • STEAM debriefing meeting: 5 minutes
  • Tech Role Teardown: 15 minutes
  • Total Weekly Time Commitment: 7 hours, approx.
